The joy of graduating from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) turned into despair for many post-graduate students, as they were unable to collect their academic gowns due to a theft incident.
According to PM News, a bus conveying the gowns from the School of Post-Graduate Studies (SPGS) to the various faculties was vandalized and looted by some hoodlums on Tuesday afternoon.
The graduates were required to pay N15,000 each for the gowns, which were mandatory, for the collection of the gowns, for the 54th convocation ceremony scheduled for this week.
However, many of them were left disappointed and frustrated as they received a text message and an email to the affected students, by the SPGS management, informing them of the unfortunate incident and apologizing for the inconvenience.
The message read: “Dear graduate, we regret to inform you that the distribution of SPGS academic gowns is now suspended. Sadly, the remaining gowns were stolen, and our bus vandalised this afternoon.”
According to the report, it is not clear how many gowns were stolen or how the SPGS plans to resolve the issue before the convocation ceremony.
