A late Monday evening accident along Poka Road in Epe, Lagos State, resulted in the death of an unidentified motor boy who was accompanying a truck involved in a collision with another truck. This was confirmed by Nosa Okunbor, Head of Public Affairs of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
According to Okunbor’s statement, obtained Tuesday, the accident happened when a truck tried to overtake a mini-truck containing bags of cement and individuals, resulting in a collision, as determined by investigations at the scene.
Okunbor further explained that the force of the collision caused one of the motor boys to fall, resulting in fatal injuries. He recounted, “When our response team arrived at the scene at 1922hrs, they found a mini-truck, with an unknown registration number, carrying Dangote Cement, involved in an accident at the specified location.”
“Further investigations by the LRT revealed that the said mini-truck while approaching the abovementioned road, was involved in an accident when attempts by an unknown articulated truck to overtake it resulted in a side collision with the said mini-truck.
“Impact of the collision reportedly resulted in the fall of one of the motor boys who sat on the cement at the back of the mini-truck, and the subsequent loss of his life, while the unknown articulated truck absconded from the scene
The LASEMA spokesperson noted that the body of the deceased was handed over to the police for necessary action.
“The LRT has bagged the remains of the victim and handed them over to police officers from Noforija Police Station, led by an Inspector. The bagged commodity has been taken to the Epe General Hospital morgue by the police.”
He added that necessary measures were activated to ensure the safety of road users after the accident.
“The LRT has activated necessary safety and appropriate control measures for the protection of all responders and road users at the incident scene during the operation,” Okunbor noted.
It was reported on Monday that no fewer than three persons lost their lives while 17 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in multiple accidents along the Maryland area of the state in the early hours of Sunday.
Okunbor had said that the first accident occurred when a diesel-laden tanker experienced brake failure and rammed into several vehicles, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to an unspecified number of others.
He added that upon the LASEMA team’s arrival at the scene around 1 a.m., they discovered another crash involving a containerised truck that had collided with a MACK truck, leaving the container truck driver with a leg injury.
