Aminu Shanaki, a 36-year-old suspect, was brought before the Ogba Magistrate Court in Ikeja on Tuesday to answer charges related to the alleged abduction of a minor, prompting calls for stricter child protection measures.
The defendant stands accused of conspiracy and theft, as outlined in the two-count charge filed by the police.
During the court proceedings, Police Prosecutor Inspector John Iberedem presented allegations that the defendant perpetrated the crimes on September 7, 2024, at the Kola Bus Stop location in Alagbado, Lagos State.
According to Inspector Iberedem, the defendant allegedly abducted a child belonging to Mrs. Kausara Olaegbe before being apprehended by passersby and handed over to the police.
According to the prosecutor, the offences committed contravened Sections 275(1)(a) and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
Consequently, Magistrate Mrs. Ejiro Kubeinje granted him bail of N300,000, with two sureties in like sum.
Kubeinje said the sureties must provide proof of employment and tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case has been adjourned to October 15, 2024, for mention.
