The Super Eagles have moved to the top 30 in the latest, Federation Internationale de Football Association, FIFA Ranking after their performance in the just concluded 2023 African Cup of Nation, AFCON.
The Super Eagles, who were in the 42nd position, won silver medal and ranked 28th in the world according to the latest ranking.
In the same vein, the West Africans are also now ranked the third best team in Africa.
Morocco are the highest ranked country in Africa, with Senegal in second position.
Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire complete the top five teams on the continent.
This achievement marks Super Eagles’ best ranking in 16 years, since February 2008 when they were ranked 19th in the world.
Going back to history, in April 1994, the Nigerian national football team achieved a remarkable feat by being ranked 5th in the FIFA rankings.
This remains the highest FIFA ranking position ever attained by an African football team.
Over the years, the Super Eagles’ rankings have fluctuated due to various factors such as performance in international tournaments, friendly matches, and changes in the FIFA ranking system.
In 2021 the Super Eagles started the year ranked 36th globally and 3rd in Africa.
Throughout the year, they maintained a consistent position, achieving their best ranking of 32nd in April.
