A security guard, Olawale Olarewaju, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by an Ikeja sexual offences and domestic violence court for raping a 12-year-old girl in 2018.
The girl, who is now 18 years old after six years prior to the incident, testified against Olarewaju a year after the incident.
He father also gave evidence as the second prosecution witness.
The trial judge, Rahman Oshodi, said he believed the girl’s testimony, which was consistent with her father’s, and that she gave a clear account of how Olarewaju attacked her when she went to fetch water, tore her clothes and forced himself on her.
The judge also said that Olarewaju’s defence was not credible, as he contradicted himself on whether he knew the girl or not, and admitted that the prosecution was a regular visitor to the compound where he worked.
The Lagos State Sexual and Domestic Violence Agency (LSDVA), which prosecuted the case, said that Olarewaju’s offence violated Section 137 of the 2015 criminal laws of Lagos state.
The agency also said that the judge ordered that Olarewaju’s name be added to the Lagos State Sexual Offences Register, and that he would spend the rest of his life in prison.
