The box office landscape for Nollywood movies experienced a noticeable shift as the holiday season came to a close.
According to data released by the Cinemas Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), the record-breaking comedy-drama ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ recorded a significant 55% drop in gross revenue from January 12, 2024, to January 18, 2024.
The movie, produced by Funke Akindele, brought in ₦84.6 million during this period, marking a considerable decrease from the previous week.
Despite this decline, ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ remains resilient, securing its position as the most-watched Nigerian cinematic movie for the fifth consecutive time.
The movie’s total earnings now stand at an impressive ₦1,320,874,174. While maintaining its dominance, ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ faces challenges from other films, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom experiencing a 48% drop in the same week, closing in on the ₦500 million mark.
In the third spot, Toyin Abraham’s ‘Malaika’ withstood the piracy leak and sustained its position on the charts with a seven-day gross of ₦24.5 million, accumulating a total of ₦272,353,324 over four weeks in Nigerian cinemas.
Following closely is Mercy Aigbe’s ‘Ada Omo Daddy,’ which recorded a seven-day gross of ₦14.7 million, reaching a total of ₦200,834,172.
As the battle against illegal dubbing continues, both ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ and ‘Malaika’ forge ahead with their international releases, highlighting the resilience of Nigerian cinema despite the challenges in the industry.
