Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface excused from training as potential Saudi move nears

Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has been excused from training as a potential move to Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr nears.

The 24-year-old, whose contract expires in late 2028, joined Leverkusen in the summer of 2023.

However, the Nigeria international may be heading towards a transfer to the Middle East after missing training ahead of Leverkusen’s Champions League game against Sparta Prague on Wednesday.

Boniface, who also played for Norweigan side Bodo/Glimt, joined Leverkusen in 2023 from Belgium Pro League side Union Saint-Gilloise.

In his debut season, he played a key role in Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga and German Cup as well as the German Super Cup in the summer of 2024. He scored 21 goals and provided ten assists in 34 games for Xabi Alonso’s side.

A hamstring injury sustained in Novemberas well as fitness issues have seen the Nigerian make 15 appearances, scoring eight goals. Patrik Schick has since established himself as Leverkusen’s first-choice striker, scoring 17 goals in 25 games this season.

Boniface’s last appearance for Leverkusen came against Vfl Bochum on November 9.

He has scored one goal in 11 appearances for Nigeria but missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.
