Sierra Leone Ex-President Chooses Nigerian Healthcare Over Political Drama

EX SIERRA LEONE PRESIDENT

In a surprising twist, ex-President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma, on Friday, jets off to Nigeria for medical treatment, leaving behind the political turbulence in Sierra Leone.

News had it that Koroma, masterminded a failed coup to overthrow the incumbent president, Julius Maada Bio, last November.

On this note, the government of President Bio, charged him on January 3 with four offences including treason in relation to the events in late November.

He was however, released on bail but placed on house arrest at his residence in Freetown while the matter was adjourned till January 17.

Recall that on January 3, Koroma was scheduled to relocate to Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, temporarily pending approval from President Maada Bio after failed coup plot.

But he has effectively been under house arrest since December 9, 2023.

However, Koroma landed in Abuja on Friday afternoon, welcomed by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and the president of the ECOWAS Commission Omar Alieu Touray.

News has it that ECOWAS intervention led to his temporary relocation, allowing him to spend a maximum of three months in Abuja as approved by Sierra Leone’s judicial authorities.
