The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo, was impeached by 18 lawmakers out of the 26-member assembly on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
The impeachment was carried out during a plenary session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Bolanle Ajayi, who announced the election of Oludaisi Elemide, representing Odeda State Constituency, as the new Speaker.
The motion for Oluomo’s impeachment was moved by Adegoke Adeyanju, an APC lawmaker from Yewa North 1 State Constituency, and seconded by Ademola Adeniran, another APC lawmaker from Sagamu II State Constituency.
The lawmakers accused Oluomo of gross misconduct, which included high-handedness, lack of focus and transparency, arrogance, poor leadership style, and financial misappropriation.
They also alleged that he incited members against themselves and undermined the authority of the House.
The Clerk and the Deputy Clerk of the House, Deji Adeyemo and Funmilayo Adeyemi, were present at the plenary, as well as security personnel from the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The impeachment of Oluomo came as a surprise to many observers, as he was reelected as the Speaker in June 2023 after a week of tension over the seat.
He had been the Speaker since June 2019, when he was unanimously elected by the lawmakers. He had also enjoyed a cordial relationship with the governor and the APC leadership in the state.
