The special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has categorically denied the unfounded rumor circulating on social media about the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) being relocated to Lagos.
Addressing the issue on his official X handle (formally twitter), Onanuga emphasized that the speculations originated during the 2023 general elections campaign and were promptly dismissed.
He clarified that President Tinubu has no intention of moving the FCT to Lagos, countering claims made by those with apparent political motivations.
Onanuga highlighted the recent administrative moves, such as the relocation of some departments of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to Lagos, explaining that they do not equate to the wholesale relocation of the FCT.
“The movement of FAAN, a department of the Aviation Ministry to Lagos, where it was based before former minister Hadi Sirika moved it to Abuja during the last administration, does not amount to moving the FCT to Lagos. The administrative move should have attracted scant attention, as Lagos is the commercial capital and the hub of aviation business in Nigeria. FAAN should be nowhere else but near the industry it regulates. FAAN will still maintain some presence in Abuja, as it is not a wholesale movement.” he said
However, the Special Adviser urged against politicizing administrative decisions and emphasized the importance of distinguishing between temporary changes and broader political agendas.
