Neuropsychiatric Hospital Aro Plans Institute of Psychiatry as Minister of Health Pays Visit

NEUROPSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL ARO ABEOKUTA

In a step towards realizing a long-held vision, the management of Neuropsychiatric Hospital Aro in Abeokuta, under the leadership of Dr. Paul Agboola, Provost and Medical Director, is set to establish an Institute of Psychiatry. To further this initiative and discuss various projects, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, paid a courtesy visit to the hospital on Saturday, March 10, 2024.

Dr. Alausa was warmly received by Dr. Agboola and other top management members, with a bouquet presented by Miss Oluwafunmilola Oyeleye. The visit included a comprehensive tour of new, renovated, and proposed buildings for the Institute of Psychiatry.

During the tour, the Minister visited various hospital units, including the General Medical Practice Unit, the intensive care unit, and the library building. Fruitful discussions were held with consultants engaged by the hospital for remodeling projects.

The highlight of the visit was a town hall meeting attended by hospital stakeholders, including department heads, consultants, union leaders, and members of the media. Dr. Agboola expressed gratitude to Dr. Alausa for his support and highlighted the collaborative efforts of sister hospitals in establishing the Institute of Psychiatry.

Presentations were made on the hospital’s manpower needs and progress in establishing the Institute of Psychiatry and College of General Nursing. The Medical Directors of sister psychiatric hospitals also spoke in support of the initiative.

Dr. Alausa, in his address, commended the hospital’s efforts and outlined the Ministry of Health’s initiatives to improve healthcare delivery and address the exodus of healthcare workers. He emphasized the government’s commitment to setting up more training institutions to meet local needs.

The Minister engaged in a Q&A session with union and association leaders before Dr. Sunday Amosu delivered a vote of thanks on behalf of the management.

The visit concluded with a photo session and a media parley with invited members of the press. Dignitaries present included Dr. Paul Agboola, Dr. Olugbenga Owoeye, Dr. Imafidon Agbonile, Dr. Bassey Edet, Dr. Shehu Sale, and other hospital management members.
