A tragic accident which occurred on Monday at approximately 3:30 pm when a lone white Toyota Hiace bus caught fire near RCC yard, along Ijebu-Ode/Benin expressway, resulting in the deaths of 18 passengers, while the driver sustained critical injuries.”
According to Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), the bus fire on Ijebu-Ode/Benin expressway was sparked when the vehicle hit a damaged section of road, causing a keg of petrol onboard to topple and spill fuel onto the exhaust pipe, engulfing the bus in flames.”
Akinbiyi explained that, according to eyewitnesses and the driver, the crash occurred when a keg of petrol inside the bus fell over on a damaged road section, spilling fuel onto the floor and exhaust pipe, causing the vehicle to catch fire while driving
Akinbiyi added that the injured driver had been taken to Rona Hospital for medical care while the corpses of the dead were deposited at the State Hospital, Ijebu Ode.
While commiserating with families of the accident victims, Akinbiyi urged drivers to desist from carrying petrol in their vehicles due to the attendant risk involved.
Similarly, a Mazda bus with registration No JGB 330 ZT was equally said to have also crashed around Ita Osu at about 6:45 pm on Monday along Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu expressway leaving seven people injured.
The accident was blamed on excessive speeding and tyre burst after which the vehicle somersaulted.
The injured were reportedly rescued at State Hospital, Ijaye Abeokuta.
